Limestone islands rising from the water in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Vietnam

Hanoi's old quarter, a Ha Long Bay cruise, the limestone river valleys of Ninh Binh, lantern-lit Hoi An and the energy of Ho Chi Minh City – with Phu Quoc for a beach finish.

International Holidays

Vietnam rewards a north-to-south journey. Most first visits combine Hanoi with an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay and a full day in Ninh Binh, then fly to central Vietnam for Hoi An and Da Nang, and finish in Ho Chi Minh City or on Phu Quoc island. We plan the order around the season, because the north, centre and south have different weather at the same time of year.

Highlights

  • Overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay
  • Ninh Binh boat ride among limestone karsts
  • The old town of Hoi An
  • Hanoi's old quarter and street food
  • Beaches on Phu Quoc
Seasons

Best time to visit

  • February to April is usually the best time to travel the whole country.
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang) can see heavy rain and storms from about September to December.
  • Phu Quoc is at its best from about November to April.
